J.P Morgan's Public Finance Team - Public Finance Associate (San Francisco)

J.P Morgan's Public Finance team is seeking experienced Public Finance Associate candidates for our San Francisco office, working with our Infrastructure Team.

Ideal candidates are adaptable, capable of managing projects independently, and prepared to take on significant responsibilities within a team. A strong work ethic, commitment to the multi-year Associate program, and the ability to work under pressure to produce accurate, detailed materials within tight deadlines are essential.

As a Public Finance Associate, you will provide investment banking solutions for complex public sector financing needs across the country. Your role involves collaborating with sales & trading, underwriting, derivatives, and debt capital markets desks on prospective and ongoing transactions. Responsibilities include developing financial models, conducting credit and debt capacity analyses, and executing bond financings. You will also engage with various firm professionals to facilitate presentations, RFP responses, and bond transactions.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Develop customized financial models using Excel to structure bond financings.
  2. Utilize industry-approved third-party programs (DBC) for bond structuring.
  3. Perform credit and debt capacity analyses for specific credits based on industry/sector.
  4. Prepare responses to RFPs as part of the solicitation process.
  5. Create and manage debt profiles, evaluate existing debt portfolios for refunding/restructuring, and execute bond financings.
  6. Collaborate with Public Finance teams, including DCM, syndicate desks, credit origination, and derivatives marketing, to pitch municipal clients and execute transactions.
  7. Prepare presentation materials for client meetings and participate in client presentations as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure, producing accurate, detailed materials within tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong academic background, teamwork, communication skills, and high energy.
  • Undergraduate degree from a competitive university with coursework in finance or economics.
  • Previous Public Finance experience at an investment bank or financial advisory firm.
  • Experience with DBC software, bond structuring, and transaction execution.

  • Adaptability, project management skills, and readiness to assume high responsibility.
